The Cyclorama of Jerusalem is the largest panorama painting in all of the Americas and the only Canadian example of a historical circular panorama installed on stilts. Panoramas are the predecessors to film and movie theaters, the precursor to 3D movies. On display in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré since 1895, this monumental work of art was created in New York from 1887 to 1889. It is 14 meters (45 feet) high and 110 meters (360 feet) in circumference. Together, the foreground and the 1540 square meter (16.575 sq ft) painting create an illusion of life that is so real, that the visitors feel that they are actually in Jerusalem and witnessing the crucifixion of Jesus. From the central raised viewing gallery one can look upon Jerusalem city and over 80 kilometers of surrounding countryside in all four directions.
The Cyclorama of Jerusalem is one of only 17 19th-century panoramas still existing in the world, and the third oldest in its original rotunda, making it an artistic and architectural ensemble of international importance.
Breathtaking and exceptional, this passage to biblical times in the heart of the Holy Land will fascinate you.
